Thrifty Ice Cream
32nd St & Cactus... those were the days. Mom would spend what seemed like hours in the Thrifty, shopping for who knows what. What made it all possible, kept us sane, and therefore my mother sane, was buying the three of us kids a double scoop of cheap cold creamy goodness. For about 50 cents a piece, my Mom bought 50 minutes of whine-free-kid shopping time. My favorite - a scoop of mint chip and one of chocolate malt ball. I guess they weren't really scoops, though, more like were cylinders. We quickly learned to steer clear of the gumball ice cream, though - while fun on the way in, it did not pass through quite right, ya know? Well, the Thrifty on Cactus is long gone now, but if you get the hankerin' for a cylindrical scoop of chocolate malt ball, you can head down to Rocky Point. And the best part of all - there's no store to be found, just a little stand that sells ice cream. Sorry Mom!
